Rapa Nui (Easter Island)
The news travels around the world that a forest fire occurred on Rapa Nui (Easter Island) that is a remote island floating in the middle of South Pacific. Many Moai statues were cracked or blackened by the heat of the forest fire and were serious damaged beyond repair.
The area around Rano Raraku which is registered as a World Heritage site suffered the most damage. There are 386 Moai statues scattered around the area including those buried underground. News show reported that 20% of Moai statues in Rano Raraku were damaged.
I visited Rapa Nui (Easter Island) in 2001 and had hoped to go back there again to photograph moai statues someday, so I am very disappointed with the news. I pray that the Moai statues will be restored somehow.
When I took this photo, I remember sitting by the Moai statues all alone until dusk with no one around at Rano Raraku where the forest fire broke out.
