南十字星　Southern Cross

「南十字星」と聞くとどこか浪漫を感じる響ですね。
全天で一番小さな星座ですが、十文字にクロスする南十字星（南十字座）は南半球で最も美しい星座とも言われています。
天のほぼ南極の位置にあるので、日本では見れないと思われている方も多いと思いますが、沖縄本島南部や、石垣島や波照間島などがある八重山諸島や小笠原諸島の父島、母島など、緯度の低い地域では季節によっては水平線近くに４つの星全てを見ることができます。

When you hear "Southern Cross", it sounds a sense of romantic.
It’s the smallest constellation in the sky, the Southern Cross is said to be the most beautiful constellation in the Southern Hemisphere.
Since it’s located almost at the South Pole of the sky, many people think that it can not be seen in Japan but there are some places you can see it such as the southern part of the main island of Okinawa, the Yaeyama Islands including Ishigaki Island and Hateruma Island, Chichi-jima island and Haha-jima Island of the Bonin (Ogasawara) Islands. All four stars can be seen near the horizon depending on the season in these low latitude regions.
