貴重な植物 Precious plant

小笠原諸島の父島のみに自生し、春に真っ白な花を咲かせるムニンツツジは野生下では父島の躑躅山にわずか１株しか自生していなく絶滅が危惧されています。

平成16年（2004年）に「絶滅の恐れのある野生動植物の種の保存に関する法律（種の保存法）」により「国内希少野生動植物種」に指定されています。
同年に保護増殖事業計画(農林水産省、環境省)が策定され、小石川植物園（東京大学大学院理学系研究科付属植物園）において増殖技術の開発、自生株由来の系統保存が実施され、父島の躑躅山、赤旗山には植え戻しを行った数十株の個体が生育しています。写真の場所では植え戻し株が美しい花を咲かせています。
自生地ではノヤギの侵入防止柵の設置により絶滅を防止（環境省事業）しています。

Munin-tsutsuji (Rhododendron boninense) which grows wild only on Chichi-jima island in the Bonin (Ogasawara) Islands and blooms pure white flowers in Spring. There is only one strain remains in the wild that grows on Mt. Tsutsuji-yama of Chichijima island in the Bonin (Ogasawara) Islands and is in danger of extinction.

It is protected and designated as a “National Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora” under the Law for the Conservation of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora issued in 2004.
In the same year, a conservation and breeding business plan (Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Ministry of the Environment) was formulated.
Breeding technology has been developed and strains derived from native strains have been preserved at Koishikawa Botanical Garden that operated by the University of Tokyo and dozens of replanted individuals are growing on Mt. Tsutsuji-yama and Mt. Akahata-yama on Chichijima island.
At the place shown in the picture, you can see replanted strains of Munin-tsutsuji blooming with beautiful flowers.
The Ministry of the Environment is preventing extinction by installing fences around the own habitat to prevent the invasion of wild goats.
